Spring 2022 Anime Series to Watch

The seasons continue to turn. It's spring now and that means exciting anime to watch with series that will begin airing in April. We have four book series receiving a new or continuing adaptations this year.

This is a really fantasy-centric season for our titles! Get ready for magic systems and glowing seals that are drawn on the ground and in the air. Have you heard of Kabbalah or Gnosticism? It's probably showing up!

The Executioner and Her Way of Life

The Lost Ones are wanderers who come here from a distant world known as "Japan." No one knows how or why they leave their homes. The only thing that is certain is that they bring disaster and calamity. The duty of exterminating them without remorse falls to Menou, a young Executioner. When she meets Akari, it seems like just another job...until she discovers it's impossible to kill this girl! And when Menou begins to search for a way to defeat this immortality, Akari is more than happy to tag along! So begins a journey that will change Menou forever...

While promoting this series, we were told that while our partners in Japan weren't just going to call this a "Yuri Isekai", we could. That's a fair summary - though there's a lot of interesting worldbuilding going on in the background when the cold Menou and clueless Akari meet.

The Japanese title, "Way of Life" has a superscript/alternate reading as "Virgin Road". So you might see it called that sometimes.

Dat-A-Live IV

April 10. The first day of school. Shido Itsuka is rudely awoken by his personal alarm clock—his little sister. It’s shaping up to be another typical day…well, as typical as it gets on a planet plagued by massive spatial quakes. Little does Shido know, however, his life is about to take a sudden turn when he encounters the source of this destructive phenomenon—a girl his age, apparently known as a Spirit. Turns out, there are only two ways he can stop her from unleashing hell on the world: Eliminate her by force or placate her…by taking her out on a date and making her fall in love with him!

Date-A-Live Season 4 is way past our current release of the light novels. Time-traveling murder maiden Kurumi is up to something. The Akashic Records are, statistically, probably involved.

Magia Record

Recurring dreams of an unfamiliar girl draw Iroha Tamaki to Kamihama City, the last place she visited before the dreams began. Her only clue is a tiny Kyubey, which she aims to catch in the hope it will provide answers about the dreams and the heartache she feels each time they fade. Still, even as an experienced magical girl, the witches in this city are far more powerful than anything she's encountered back home. Can Iroha survive in Kamihama long enough to uncover the secrets within? A new story unfolds in this manga adaptation of the mobile game!

Magical Girls! They're always having problems. Especially in the world of Madoka Magica. But this time Iroha is on the trail of her long-lost sister Ui. Can she find her in this strange city?

The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody

As the most powerful entity of all time, the Demon Lord Varvatos thinks life is a big fat snore. When he takes matters into his own hands and decides to reincarnate, he calibrates his magical strength to be perfectly average. But there is no way he could have predicted that everyone in the modern world would be weak as hell, which means he is totally overpowered once again! Reborn under the name Ard, he has ladies fawning over him, the royal family begging him to become the next king, and an ex-minion insisting on killing him?! But Ard has a one-track mind, and he won't stop at anything to achieve his ultimate goal!

What if there was a really strong guy who didn't have too many problems? Lie back, relax, and think about demon lords who are cool, and can make magic seals. That's what this series offers.
