Celebrating Pride Month One Trope at a Time

This Pride Month, we’re breaking down our favorite Boys Love and Girls Love titles by trope!

Queer romance isn’t a monolith; it’s full of action, comedy, drama, and every trope under the sun! From the slow-burn pining of childhood friendship to the high-voltage tension of enemies to lovers, these stories take classic romance tropes and make them entirely their own. In honor of Pride Month, we’ve curated a list featuring one must-read BL and one must-read GL (or yuri) title for some of our favorite tropes in the business! Happy Pride, and happy reading!

Enemies-to-Lovers:

Few tropes can match the electric tension of enemies! It’s where fiery animosity gradually melts into fierce and undeniable devotion. Watching rivals or bitter enemies drop their guards and realize that the person they hated most is the only one who truly understands them makes for the ultimate romantic payoff!

BL: Semantic Error

Semantic Error perfectly embodies the enemies-to-lovers trope as it follows a rigid, rule-following computer science student and a free-spirited design major whose initial mutual animosity and clashing personalities gradually evolve into a romantic connection!

GL: Catch These Hands!

Catch These Hands! delivers a hilarious and heartwarming enemies-to-lovers romance as two former high school delinquents reunite in adulthood, trading their old physical rivalry for an unexpectedly supportive domestic partnership.

Workplace Romance:

Romance in the workplace in BL and GL manga brings a delightful “prohibited but irresistible” energy to the table, turning the mundane corporate grind into a breeding ground for stolen glances and high-stakes tension. There is something uniquely thrilling about watching characters navigate strict professional boundaries, hidden office secrets, and the intense proximity of late-night overtime shifts as their strictly business relationships evolve into deeply personal connections.

BL: Senpai, This Can’t Be Love!

This workplace romance captures the classic grumpy-meets-sunshine dynamic when an enthusiastic junior 3D animator mistakes his aloof and highly skilled senior colleague’s harsh training methods for genuine dislike, completely unaware that his mentor is harboring a massive, tongue-tied crush on him!

GL: What Does the Fox Say? (Available this August)

Set in a game development studio, this office romance follows a new hire as she falls for her aloof team leader, only to find herself entangled in a dramatic workplace love triangle with the company president—who also happens to be her boss’s secret ex.

Isekai:

While the “isekai” phenomenon has completely dominated mainstream anime, this high-stakes trope of being transported or reincarnated into another world has also taken the BL and GL manga scenes by storm! Whether a protagonist is waking up as a villainess trying to avoid a tragic fate by wooing the heroine or a modern guy is navigating a fantasy realm alongside a powerful mythical commander, these stories breathe fresh, romantic life into a wildly popular genre by proving that love can transcend even the boundaries of reality itself!

BL: The Other World’s Books Depend on the Bean Counter

When a workaholic accountant is summoned to a fantasy realm, his determination to fix the kingdom’s chaotic royal budget leads to a delightful romance with the handsome knight commander who becomes fiercely protective of him.

GL: The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

After being transported into a fantasy world, a chaotic and magic-obsessed princess rescues a disgraced noblewoman from a publicly broken engagement, leading the two girls to pioneer a brand-new form of magic while developing a deep, world-changing bond.

Human/Monster Romance:

Much like the timeless allure of Beauty and the Beast, human/monster romances in BL and GL manga tap into our ability to find love with anyone! These stories masterfully contrast human vulnerability with the raw, often misunderstood power of monstrous, supernatural, or even alien partners.

BL: The Crow’s Ballad at Dawn (Available this July)

Set in a hauntingly beautiful fantasy world, this romance follows a human who forms a delicate bond with a mysterious and lethal crow-monster (tengu), proving that love can bloom even in the darkest, most predatory corners of existence!

GL: This Monster Wants to Eat Me

This dark and emotionally complex romance follows a grieving human girl who desires nothing more than to be consumed by a beautiful sea monster, only for the monster to protect her from other predators while delaying her own meal as she slowly falls in love with her intended prey.
