Books to Read When You're Done Playing Elden Ring

Elden Ring. Oh, Elden Ring! If you're like us, perhaps you've spent (slightly) less time reading manga and light novels this week and a little more time delving into the world of Elden Ring.

We released a small guidebook before the release of the game, The Overture of ELDEN RING, an English release of a Famitsu magazine book. The Overture of ELDEN RING covers the first section of the game and delves into the history of FromSoftware, including an interview with the game's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki.

It's an incredible game with beautiful art and world design, writing, and the impressive (and difficult) gameplay we've come to expect from the creators of the Souls franchise. The legacy dungeons, the slow, organic questlines—I found this great sword at the bottom of the—I digress...

Once you complete Elden Ring, you may still have that itch to enter a mysterious, moody fantasy world. If so, here are some great light novel series that you have to check out.

Delicious in Dungeon

When young adventurer Laios and his company are attacked and soundly thrashed by a dragon deep in a dungeon, the party loses all its money and provisions...and a member! They're eager to go back and save her, but there is just one problem: If they set out with no food or coin to speak of, they're sure to starve on the way! But Laios comes up with a brilliant idea: "Let's eat the monsters!" Slimes, basilisks, and even dragons...none are safe from the appetites of these dungeon-crawling gourmands!

Hey, where do all these dungeons come from? Who designed this deadly death-trap?

Elden Ring is a game about experiencing the physicality of a fantasy world through intense combat. Delicious in Dungeon is a manga series about experiencing the physicality of a fantasy world by imagining what it would be like to cook and eat the monsters.

The Otherworlder, Exploring the Dungeon

Strapped for cash, Souya signs up for a shady gig straight out of a video game: warp to a fantasy world with a team of experts and ascend a dungeon tower to make off with its spoils. However, an accident in the transfer process leaves him stranded there alone. Desperate for support, he recruits a host of adventurers—from elven sisters banished from their forest, to a Goddess of Deception and Secrecy partial to lazing about as a cat—to form a party that can brave the tower’s perils. Caught between corrupt nobles and merchants outside the dungeon and deadly monsters within, can this motley band rise to the challenge? Or will Souya’s adventure end before it even begins?

A story about a mysterious fantasy world and a person from a regular world who explores it without the benefit of any kind of fun skill or magic.

I've been told by this book's editor that "The plot of Volume 2 is just Bloodborne." There's some stuff about cursed blood, apparently. Now, that's a compelling pitch.

The Wolf Never Sleeps

Seeking strength and glory, the adventurer Lecan challenges monster and maze alike. Until one day, he finds a mysterious black hole…leading to another world! But even in a different world, the path of the “One-Eyed Wolf” remains unchanged. The only question is—can he survive the new world?

This one isn't out for another month, but it's so perfect we had to include it. His sword is incredibly heavy. He's going to challenge fearsome, horrific monsters, vast dungeons, and so on.

RE: Zero

Subaru Natsuki was just trying to get to the convenience store but wound up summoned to another world. He encounters the usual things—life-threatening situations, silver haired beauties, cat fairies—you know, normal stuff. All that would be bad enough, but he's also gained the most inconvenient magical ability of all—time travel, but he's got to die to use it. How do you repay someone who saved your life when all you can do is die?

I know what you're thinking. This is another isekai! You're trying to trick me! But there's a mystery at the core of this world.

What is the nature of Subaru's ability? What's up with this witch everyone's so afraid of? This series demands a close reading to figure out some of the things that haven't been spelled out yet.
