From Novel to Manga – Bungo Stray Dogs: Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen

Bungo Stray Dogs fans, the wait is finally over! Bungo Stray Dogs: Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen, Vol. 1 is officially available now!

But did you know that this series actually started out as a light novel?

Much like Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast and Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple, this is a manga adaptation of one of Bungo Stray Dogs creator and author Kafka Asagiri’s novels set in the Bungo Stray Dogs universe. But that has us thinking…what other novels would make great manga adaptations?

Here are a few that we personally would love to see adapted into manga:

Bungo Stray Dogs, Vol. 1 (light novel): Osamu Dazai’s Entrance Exam

Doppo Kunikida is an idealist and a straitlaced detective at the Armed Detective Agency, an organization that takes on dangerous jobs even the police won’t handle. Everything in his life is going just as he’s planned…until one day, he’s paired up with the agency’s newest hire: a suspicious, eccentric, suicide-obsessed man named Osamu Dazai. Their first case together turns out to be far more complicated than Kunikida anticipated—and it looks like the detective agency’s sworn enemy, the Port Mafia, is somehow involved, too! Set two years before the events of the manga series, this is the tale of how two seemingly incompatible personalities end up forming the partnership that has made them one of Yokohama’s top detective duos!

Bungo Stray Dogs, Vol. 3 (light novel): The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency

Over a decade before the events of the manga series, a chance encounter leads professional bodyguard Yukichi Fukuzawa to begrudgingly take an arrogant boy genius named Ranpo Edogawa under his wing. Their first job brings them to a local theater on high alert after receiving a bizarre death threat—a challenge that will require both Ranpo’s brains and Fukuzawa’s experience. The aftermath spurs Fukuzawa to establish the Armed Detective Agency, an organization that takes on dangerous jobs even the police won’t handle! Plus, get a glimpse of the agency the night before Atsushi Nakajima joined the team!

Bungo Stray Dogs, Vol. 8 (light novel): Storm Bringer

It’s been roughly one year since Chuuya Nakahara joined the Port Mafia, and he’s determined to become an executive before fellow mafioso Osamu Dazai. However, a man by the name of Paul Verlaine—the king of assassins who claims to be Chuuya’s older brother—suddenly appears, vowing to murder everyone he cares about! Now Chuuya must team up with Adam, an AI investigator from Europe, to stop this madman before another storm engulfs Yokohama. Along the way, many truths will be revealed…including the answer to Chuuya’s most pressing question: Is he himself even human?

We hope you enjoy the release of Bungo Stray Dogs: Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen, Vol. 1 and here’s to hoping for some more great manga adaptations from the novels!
