If you’re not already familiar with the popular manga series, Delicious in Dungeon by Ryoko Kui, the name should give you at least a vague idea of what to expect: enjoying delicious food in the perilous depths of a dungeon! Although there is a great deal more to it than simply eating—food does play a central part of the story as it serves as a means of existence for the main characters. Despite the lack of money for supplies, each party member is willing to consume a variety of creatures they happen upon until they can rescue their comrade lost somewhere deep within the dungeon. Luckily for the group, they meet a dwarf named Senshi who is a master chef and claims to have studied monster cooking in the dungeon for over a decade! In fact, Senshi uses his shield more as a wok than for protection, and is adept enough to cut through even the toughest hide with his knife. With Senshi’s help, they are all able to survive by properly preparing dungeon delicacies including Kelpie, Green Slime, Giant Frog and Basilisk just to name a few. Each volume in this series includes a few new recipes that could seem oddly familiar if you replaced the main ingredients with everyday items instead of monsters. Perhaps Chicken could be substituted for Giant Frog, or Basilisk? And there are plenty of mushrooms in a grocery store to choose from that don’t walk around on their own! I invite you to take a look at a couple of these recipes (shown in Volume 3) and try thinking of what real-world ingredients inspired them. Be sure to check the Yen Press blog again soon for more recipe cards from this series and collect them all. Volume 4 is available now at your favorite bookseller, so check out what’s new on the menu!
